Special Days
Nursery
Nursery have been singing songs in French, counting, greeted each other and made flags.

KS2
In Year 6 we have compared two speaking countries / regions.
We have particularly looked at Normandy in France and the Ivory Coast, Africa.
We looked at their geographical location, climate, currency and other facts and produced posters comparing the two using Microsoft Word.
KS1
As part of our V.E Day celebrations, Year 1 wrote prayers thinking about what they would like to say thank you for and the sacrifices that others made for us.

Year 3
Today Year 3 celebrated Victory in Europe Day!
We learnt that it had been 80 years since the end of the Second World War.
What is VE Day and why do we celebrate it?
- VE Day stands for Victory in Europe Day - Mahdi
- It marks the end of World War 2 - Jaxon
- World War 2 went on for 6 years! - Ava
- Over 60 million people died. - Lottie
We also listened to Winston Churchill speech on VE Day in 1945 when he declared to the United Kingdom that the war has ended.
We also looked at how VE Day was celebrated in 1945.
During our VE Day celebrations we also watched a real life story of Marzenna Schejbal. She shared her story of how her life was like during and after the Second World War.
As part of our learning for VE Day we wrote a poem and designed a poster based on being thankful towards the soldiers who scarified their lives.

Children made, created, decorated hats to wear for a small donation.
Each class voted for the best hat and the winners received prizes of vouchers and kind donations of Easter eggs from one of our families.
We learnt about what the fundraising money is used for.
Children designed their own hats too, thinking about the characters on them and the material.
At the end of the day we paraded our hats to our parents and carers.

To kick start World Book Day, we had a teacher swap and Mr Barr came to read us a story called ‘Horrid Henry Robs the Bank.’ We then watched a live ‘Footy and Booky World Book Day Event.’ This was a quiz that featured two rounds of questions (one football-themed, one reading-themed) pitched by our footballing heroes and authors.
To celebrate World Book Day we also came dressed up as a character from a book.
Year 6
This week, we welcomed Pam Daunton, author of The Dove Stone.
She discussed her journey on publishing a book.
We spoke about the importance of knowing the characters and bring in them to life. We also spoke about how important speech is to portray the characters.
We focused on the setting of the book and what we can see and hear. We spoke about what the setting would be made from and what would be happening.
We also swapped classes and each teacher took time to read to a different class in school as well as learning new words and creating definitions cards. It was each child's task to take a new word home they had learnt that day.
Following on from the author visit, we created our own setting maps ad opening lines. We discussed what might be on our map as well as using synonyms to create place names. Have a look at our work and activities from the day.
The children had a visit from the police. They told us all about their job and showed us their uniform, equipment and car.
Whole School Assembly
We had a whole school assembly about Diwali and why people celebrate it. All the classes spoke about their learning.

Nursery and Diwali
After watching a videoclip and also looking at family photos Nursery children made Diya lamps, Rangoli patterns, firework pictures and also Mehndi patterns.
Year 1
We were very fortunate in Year 1 to have Ani's mum come in to speak to us all about Diwali and how her family would be celebrating this at home. She brought in photos for us to look at as well as a Diwali treat for all of the children.
Vedant brought in some Diya Lamps for us to try. We really enjoyed using these and learnt why they are used on Diwali.
We also created our own Diwali cards.
- "Diwali is sometimes called the festival of light" - Aria
- "When it is Diwali, people make Rangoli patterns" - Ethan
- "They use lights to decorate their homes. I think they look beautiful" - Abeeha

Year 2
In Year 2 we learnt that Diwali is the festival of light and we explored how Diwali is celebrated. The children created their own henna designs and also made diyas.
Year 5
Year 2
Year 1
Year 1 had a fantastic time listening to Dr Poppleton and learning all about how her role as a doctor uses maths.
This is what we learnt:
- I learnt what calculation is - Myles
- She has to count the heartbeats! - Aliy
- Dr Poppleton has to count breaths. We counted breaths for 30 seconds. Then we times it by two - Alice
- We had to double it! - Aliy
- She has to measure the medicine very carefully! - Brian
Year 1 have been learning about Katherine Johnson and her work calculating the flight path of rockets. We learnt new vocabulary such as ‘trajectory’ and enjoyed learning facts about Katherine’s life.
Year 2
We kicked started National Numeracy Day by watching a special live lesson focusing on how maths is used in space.
We joined in to a dance routine with Numberblock 1 and had a lot of fun.
As part of the live lesson, we learnt about hoe they use maths in science.
- ‘They use maths to calculate the distance between the stars and the planets.’ - Ali
- ‘They use maths to set the rocket into space.’ - Joel
- ‘Different types of maths is used to launch rockets and they have to do a lot of calculations.’ - Jaxon
We also witnessed Numberblock 10 launch off into space.
Part of National Numeracy Day we played Times Table Bingo.
Year 2 were visited by a Pharmacist, who explained to us how she used maths in her job.
- ‘A pharmacist uses maths to measure the weight of the medicines.’
- ‘They have to count how much the medication cost.’
- ‘They need to use calculations when order more medicine.’
Year 3
We have been looking at different garments, where they are made and how much they cost to buy. A school jumper made in Bangladesh cost £3.
A school jumper from Pakistan cost £2 and had better quality.
- ”If we owned a clothes shop, we would need to buy our clothes for as little as possible so that we could make money on them when we sell them.”
- ”If clothes have patterns and prints on then they will be more expensive so the profit will be less.”
- ”It costs less to buy from China than England because the factories are bigger and make more clothes so they can sell them cheeper. The factory in China can make 25,000 garments per week and the factory in England can only make 5000 garments per week.”
We have researched information about Florence Nightingale and how she used maths in her job.
Year 4
The visitor we had in year 4 to talk about their job relating to maths was Poppy’s grandad Tim. He had worked with maths and numbers all his working life and he loved maths and told us that maths (in particular our times tables) are really important in day to day life.
He said, “Numbers are magic, maths is the language of the universe and to love numbers you have to find the patterns in the numbers.”
His first job was working as the manager in a big shoe shop when there was no computers. He would have to use pen and paper to add up the sales of the day, make sure the total of sales adds up to the total of money made that day and also counting to do a stock take which including counting up all the shoes and all their prices.
His second job was working in financial services. At this job, he helped people buy houses, he helped people to save money for the future and for retirement. He worked a lot during the week and worked long hours which led him to create his own business.
This is now Tim’s third and current job. He decided to work for himself and make his own business to help people with their own work life balance. He created a pattern so that he could work out how to work to get enough money but not work as many hours. This was so he could see his family more.
Year 5
In year 5 we read about Rène Decartes. We wrote some facts about why he was influential in mathematics and then played a game of battleships to practise our knowledge of coordinates.
We had a parent visitor to class to talk about their occupation in lecturing and constructional engineering.
Mr Oladapo spoke about how his job and how he uses Mathematics within his employment teaching structural engineering at University and how Mathematics is used in different ways within everyday life. From gaming consoles to airplanes and how calculations are used to create strong buildings.
Mr Oladapo went on to talk about the importance of Mathematics in his life and he enjoyed it so much he would read these books for pleasure which gave him a great understanding for the subject. He told the children his career opportunities were endless due to his knowledge of Mathematics.
Examples of questions asked by the children were
- "Do you use pi?"
Mr Oladapo explained he uses pi as 22/7 when needing to build circular rooms and calculating the correct sizes.
- "Do you need Mathematics if you want to be a builder?"
Mr Oladapo told the children yes due to the mixing of products like concrete. Requiring the correct amount of water to mix and creating a strong foundation so the building doesn't collapse.
We played an escape room to test our knowledge on different maths areas such as Roman Numerals, area, fractions, line graphs and negative numbers.
Year 1
Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed the author visit this week. They learnt about where Mrs P had got the inspiration for her book as well as how she wrote her book. The children loved listening to the story and were able to talk about their own ‘botherbugs’
- I thought Mrs P was very interesting and it made me want to write a story - EW
- When I have botherbugs I tell my mummy about it - ME
- I liked listening to the story - PS
- My favourite character was Jojo - ES

Year 2, 3 and 4
Today we welcomed a children’s author into our school. Mrs P who is the author for the book titled ‘Jessie and JoJo. The book is focuses on worries and how we can get rid of them.
Mrs P spoke to us about her inspiration behind ‘Jessie and JoJo’ as well as her passion for caring for animals in Australia.
Year 5 and 6
Today we welcomed a children’s author into school. Mrs. P read her book to which was titled Jessie and JoJo. The book revolved around concerns and worries and how we can combat these.
Mrs. P also took time to talk about her career and answer questions the children asked. These included her favourite children’s books and authors and about her work caring for animals in Australia.
- “I found it interesting that it took so long for her to draw the pictures. I thought that would be a quick bit.”
- ”There were some really cute animals that live in Australia. I liked the quokka. I hope she writes a book with it in.”
- ”Her favourite illustrator was Quentin Blake. He draws the pictures for Roald Dahl books.”
This was a great visit with a powerful message.
