Our ECO Team is led by Mrs A Parkinson.  We meet once every half term with two or three representatives from each class in school which were voted for by their peers in September. The children in KS2 who were interested in joining wrote and shared a speech with their class to explain why they thought they would be the best candidate.

We had our last Green Flag Award Assessment in April 2017 and were very pleased to say that we passed.  A group of children showed the Assessor around school and included all the areas which show that we are an ECO School.

We are due to be assessed again in May 2019 and are working on a variety of activities and projects to show what we can do as a school to make a difference to the world.

Why not have a look at the notice board in the hall or come along on a Tuesday lunchtime at 12.00noon to join the the Eco activities - everyone welcome.

Our latest Green Flag Award - Assessor's comments 2017

'The Eco-Committee were delightful and showed me carefully round, ensuring I did not miss anything, especially the living wall.'

'I thought the skills the children had obtained from their work were of a high standard, and can only think this will have a greater impact on their future and wherever they go.'

'Well done to everyone and keep up the great work.'

As a school, we support World Vision by sponsoring a child called Chimwemwe who lives in Malawi.

FairActive Certificate - achieved 19th March 2019

We have worked hard to achieve this award.

As part of this we have tried to get everyone involved by holding Reading and Hot Chocolate afternoons as well as holding a Fairtrade Stall at our Christmas Trail afternoon.  We have held an assembly about the 'Fairtrade banana' which was fun to perform.

Our next goal is to achieve the FairAchiever award.

Potato Diary

23rd February 2018

Today we chitted our potatoes.  We had two types of potato; Rocket potatoes and Athlete potatoes.  We put them in the chitting tray.  We made sure the shoots were facing up.  We are going to leave them for two weeks.  Around the 6th of March we will plant the potatoes.  We are going to donate some potatoes to Nursery and Reception to grow.

6th March 2018

It is too cold outside to plant our potatoes.  The frost would kill them so we are waiting until the weather is a little warmer.  We may plant them indoors until the weather is better and then transfer them to the allotments.

9th April 2018

It is now warm enough to plant our potatoes outside.  We will need to feed and water them regularly to make sure that they grow.  We will need to remove the weeds.

18th May 2018

We had to weed our potatoes today.  There were so many that it took a lot of people.

Today we planted Carrots, Sweetcorn, Spring Onions and Lettuce. We watered the seeds and the Strawberries

Activities

Planting Trees

We planted small trees which will take a long time to grow.  We now need to look after them so that they do not get damaged as they are growing.  We have sleeves which we can put on that will stop the  shoots blowing over in strong winds.

Litter Picking

After the windy weather we did a litter pick as a lot of rubbish had blown into our grounds.  Small animals can be harmed by litter.  We weighed how much we had collected - 2.4kg.  We will add this information to our chart on our Noticeboard.

Composting

We now have 111 solar panels on our school roof.

Reception

We talked about solar power and looked at a book about solar pannels. We then talked about how we need to make sure we re use things. We then printed using pots and bottles.

Year 4

In year 4 we looked at the damage to the planet and discussed ways to help support the environment. We chose to investigate how the solar panels work and presented our knowledge and understanding in a video.
